Solemn Mass in the Usus Antiquior at the Lateran [Update]

Back in February I had mentioned three important Masses to be celebrated according to the usus aniquior in Italy in March and April. We have already seen images of the first of them, the ordination of five priests for the Franciscans of the Immaculate (FFI) by Archbishop Raymond Burke in Tarquinia.

Yesterday now, the Superior of the FFI, Fr Stefano Maria Manelli, celebrated Solemn Mass in the Cathedral of the Pope, the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran, on the occasion of the Octocentennial of the Approbation of the Rule of St. Francis by Innocent III on 16 April 1209. This took place in the context of the Chapter of Mats, a Conference of the Ministers General of the First Order and the TOR of the Franciscans (Friars Minor, Conventuals, and Capuchins) to celebrate this Octocentennial. Here are some images of the Mass, by way of our friends at Rinascimento Sacro.

The Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite at the "Cattolica"

Yesterday, November 17th, the Extraordinary Form of the Mass in the Roman Rite was celebrated in the Major Chapel of the Università Cattolica of Milan.

One year ago, the NLM reported about the first E.F. Mass,, celebrated by the former general Ecclesiastical Assistant, Msgr. Ambrosio, later appointed Bishop of Piacenza.
Now, thanks to the generosity of the new Ecclesiastical Assistant, Msgr. Lanza, the celebration has been made regular: every third Monday of each month Fr. Ferdinando Citterio will celebrate Mass for students, professors, and other faithful interested.

Here are some pictures from the Mass celebrated yesterday:

Solemn Mass in Regensburg

A while ago we mentioned the general assembly of the German usus antiquior society, Pro Missa Tridentina, held in Regensburg.

Now a video has become available of the Solemn Mass sung on that occasion by Fr. Axel Maußen, District Superior of FSSP in Germany, in the Old Chapel of Regensburg.

First Usus Antiquior Mass Offered by Spanish Bishop

This 15th of January H.E. The Most Rev. Manuel Ureña Pastor, Archbishop of Saragossa, celebrated a solemn requiem in the usus antiquior in the parish church of Epila in his diocese. This is the first time a Spanish bishop has offered the holy sacrifice of the Mass in the Extraordinary Form in Spain since the promulgation of Summorum Pontificum. The Mass, which was also concluding the restauration works which had been carried out in the church, was attended by 1,200 faihtful, including various government representatives. The Misa de Réquiem by Mariano Rodríguez de Ledesma was sung. Msgr. Ureña had celebrated a burial according to the usus antiquior books in the same church last year, cf. NLM article here.

Solemn Mass (Usus Antiquior) in the Pantheon Commemorates Giovanna of Savoy

It was widely reported on various sites that a Solemn Mass in the usus antiquior was to be offered in the Basilica of S. Maria ad Martyres (i.e. the Roman Pantheon) on the 28th of February of this year. The Mass was being offered in commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the passing of Giovanna of Savoy and was being hosted by the "Associazione Mafalda e Giovanna di Savoia", which organization exists to promote the cause of her beatification and canonization, and "Rinnovamento nella Tradizione".

Present at the Mass were various dignitaries, including Principe Amedeo di Savoia Aosta, and his wife, Principessa Silvia, Honorary President of the Associazione Mafalda e Giovanna di Savoia. A representative of the mayor of Rome was in attendance, as were members of the Order of the Poor Knights of Christ, including their Grand Master, Dom Marcello Alberto Cristofani della Magione.

The Mass was offered by Don Riccardo Petroni, a priest of the Roman diocese, and ecclesiastical assistant to the association Familia Christi.

The following photos were published on the website of Rinnovamento nella Tradizione and sent to the NLM by the same.

First Usus Antiquior Mass Offered at Thomas More College

Late in August we made mention here of the fact that Thomas More College in New Hampshire was introducing the usus antiquior into the campus liturgical life. This was to be inaugurated on October 7th, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.

In follow-up to that announcement, we are pleased to present some photos from that Mass.

Extraordinary Form at the Pontifical North American College

John Paul Sonnen of Orbis catholicus has very encouraging news about this morning's Holy Mass in the extraordinary form of the Roman rite at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. Read about it here. An excerpt:
Over sixty seminarians were present, including the Rector and some staff. After the Mass the seminarians had a lot to say as one student remarked: "A first and it was very nice and hope we can see some more of it..." while another smiled and noted with emotion: "Coolest Mass I ever saw!"
Fr. Benjamin Durham's FSSP first day in Finland had more than 20 people attending the Mass in Saint Henry's Cathedral, Helsinki, Finland. More Masses in the coming days, click here.

"Deus, qui verae fidei et Sedis Apostolicis primatui propugnando beatos Martyres tuos Edmundum ejusque socios invicta fortitudine roborasti: eorum precibus exoratus, nostrae, quaesumus, infirmitati succurre, ut fortes in fide reistere usque in finem valeamus. Per Dominum nostrum."

'O God, Who, for the maintenance of the true faith and the primacy of the Apostolic See, did strengthen Your blessed Martyrs Edmund and his companions with invincible fortitude: grant we beseech You, that You would hear our prayers and help our weakness, so that being made strong in faith, we may be able to resist the enemy even to the end. Through Christ our Lord.'
