La vita religiosa è essenzialmente fede / Religious life is essentially faith (ita-eng) – Don Divo Barsotti

These days we will talk about the faith in the New Testament and it is a very important thing: what is the meaning today of believing and how it is it necessary not only for our Christian life, but also for man’s life? If we analyze deeply what man is, not only on a philosophical level but also on a purely psychological level, we will see that man is passion for the infinitive and that he cannot live, if he lives, anything else than faith, faith in the infinitive, that is infinite passion for the infinitive.
That is man, who realizes himself only with a God who realizes him completely, because he can give himself only to Him completely and on the other hand this complete self-giving presumes the presence of God in man’s life. But we will have to see all of this, because if faith is so important for Christianity it is not because we want to give something which is not essential to man’s life; indeed we will have to admit that living, for the a man, means to live this faith. Completely realizing himself means for the man to live this faith until the end, a faith that is a total self-abandonment to a God who totally communicates Himself, who gives Himself.
If man does not live this relationship, he remains always a draft, he will remain always not ended, not perfectly one, not perfectly realized in all his aspirations, wishes, and hopes that God himself created in his heart. But we are going to see all of that in the future meditations. Now it is important to say that already in Israel’s life, religious life is essentially faith; it presumes a working presence of God to which the man answers with the acknowledgement, trusting in Him, with the abandonment to Him with a love which is already the answer: self-giving to Whom already gave Himself before.
